Beauty Extremes Any Girl Should Try Out

Boss giving you problems? Here's some advice

Get Stunning Sparkle

“Glitter is an easy transition to more outrageous nails,” says celebrity nail artist Kimmie Kyees, who’s worked with Rihanna. Too much? Do only the tips.”Get loose glitter, and dip your wet polished tips into it, or just coat the tips with a thick glitter polish.”

Coat ‘Em With Crackle

We’re fans of crackle topcoats. A secret: Instead of brushing on polish vertically, go sideways. “It’ll look less like lightning bolts and

Make Your Point

Adele likes a long, pointy shape, but you don’t have to go overboard—think of a kitten heel, not a stiletto nail. Kyees says to file shorter nails in an oval instead of a point so it’s not so drastic.

Work Major Length

Lip-synching onstage may be verboten, but pop stars know you can fake great hair. Nicki Minaj rocks a full wig (her stylist, Terrence Davidson, says her real hair is damage-free since she never uses color or heat!). Or try clip-in extensions. Stylist Ben Skervin, who works with Katy Perry, suggests back-combing and using hairspray near your hairline to give pieces a base to cling to

Try Bold Streaks

Color of the bright, not-found-in-nature variety—like Perry’s cotton candy hue—can be a major undertaking, so her colorist, Rita Hazan, recommends starting with streaks. “Do a clump underneath or on top,” says Hazan. How to pick a shade? “The lighter your skin and eyes, the more pastel you can go,” she says. (Obviously, Minaj can break all the rules.) “If you’re on the darker or olive side, try darker tones, like purple or midnight blue or very intense red.”

Lash Out

Major lashes are practically a job requirement for a performer like Minaj—that fringe needs to be seen way up in tier four, so mascara alone won’t cut it. The strip variety is easy to apply and often comes preglued; makeup artist Luc Bouchard suggests trimming the ends and centering on each lid. “It’ll make your eyes look rounder,” he says. Want more drama? “Apply strips on top of one another to add fluffy volume,” says makeup artist David Hernandez. “Or try lashes with feathers or adornments.” Don’t forget eyeliner! Says Perry’s makeup artist, Jake Bailey: “If you pair major lashes with nothing, it looks freaky.”

Amp Up Your Eyes

Sometimes all you need is color to transform your eye-makeup routine. “Switch from neutral eye pencil to a bright hue,” says Bailey. But it doesn’t take much: “At work or a party, you’re not being blown out with a million strobes like a celeb is on the red carpet. When you’re just a few feet away from someone, a bit of electric blue liner on your lower lash lines will make an impact.” Or layer colored shadow on top of the classic smoky-eye look.

Make It All About Lips

“If you want to go a little extreme,” recommends Hernandez, “pick a lipstick that’s a few shades brighter than one you already like, to punch it up.” For a loud color that looks gorge no matter what, Bailey says a bright berry works on most.
